Kolkata : Observing that attempts were afoot to advance the dates for the panchayat (rural) polls in West Bengal, the Left Front Thursday said there was a need to hold discussions with allies and finalise strategy.
“There is a need to hold talks with our allies for the panchayat polls. Attempts are being made to ensure the polls are held early so we need to be prepared. We are in talks with the allies to discuss our strategies for the polls,” Left Front chairman Biman Bose told mediapersons here.
Bose also expressed concern over talks of polls being held Jan 2013. “There are talks that the polls might be held in January end, but I cannot understand how. During that time, examinations are scheduled, and for the elections, you need at least 30,000 schools for booths,” said Bose.
The Left Front had earlier protested the Mamata Banerjee-led government’s alleged attempts before the state election commission to advance the opolls. The Front also expressed concern over rising instances of atrocities against women in the country, and said it would hold an assembly in the city to stir widespread protests against the poor security given to women.
“Not a single day passes when attacks on women are not reported. From Haryana to Delhi including Bengal, the situation is worrisome. We need to stir up protests,” said Bose.
All Left Front parties and affiliated organisations, especially women’s units, are set to hold an assembly in the city Nov 17 to garner support for the movement, Bose said.
