Gary Yue Mun Yew, an engineer by profession, was initially fined 6,000 Singapore dollars (around $5,000) by a court in March for posting a comment on the Facebook page of socio-political platform Temasek Review two years ago.

In his posting was a link to a YouTube video that depicted the assassination of former Egyptian President Anwar Sadat with a comment saying “we should re-enact” a live version of the assassination at Singapore’s National Day Parade.

The judge concluded that Yue’s intention was to seek attention rather than incite violence when he made the posting. He said a fine was inadequate.

The prosecution sought a jail term of between six and nine months.

The judge made references to the decision of a British court in the case of two men who were jailed for four years for inciting people via Facebook during the riots last year.

Yue lost his job at a Singapore firm as a result of the case.
