Supreme Court opinion did not vindicate government stand: BJP

New Delhi : The BJP Friday said the Supreme Court opinion on allocation of natural resources did not vindicate the government stand, as it said non-auctioning methods were fair only if the purpose was social.

“Mandatory auction comes under two categories – one is for commercial purpose and the other for social purpose,” Bharatiya Janata Party leader Arun Jaitley said.

“The opinion said if it (auction) is for commercial purpose and given through competitive bidding, then it is constitutional,” he said.

The BJP leader alleged that the ruling Congress ran propaganda, saying the opinion vindicated its stand.

“The Congress ran a propaganda saying the opinion vindicated their stand… The opinion clearly said that auction is an acceptable method if it is for social purpose. If allocation is for commercial purpose, it will be a violation of the constitution,” he said.

A Supreme Court opinion Thursday on a presidential reference on the 2G issue said auction can’t be the only criteria for allocating resources.
