Colombo : The Sri Lankan navy rescued over 100 Bangladeshi and Myanmar nationals from a boat that capsized off the island in its eastern seas, a navy spokesman said Sunday.
Kosala Warnakulasuriya told Xinhua that navy vessels were deployed Saturday night after information was received about a stranded boat.
The navy found a total of 138 people cramped into a small boat and their lives were in danger, he said.
They were immediately transferred onto the navy boats and brought ashore.
He said most of them were suffering from dehydration and were admitted to a hospital.
It was not clear where the people were heading.
In recent times, hundreds of Sri Lankans have been arrested while attempting to go by boat to Australia to seek asylum.
