Kolkata: A majority of 100 women who underwent operations at a sterilization camp in a rural health facility in West Bengal’s Malda district were dumped in an open field in unhygienic conditions due to shortage of beds. Officials Thursday said a probe was now on.
The ligation procedure was carried out in the Manickchak Rural Health Centre Wednesday.
After drawing flak, the district health officials have started a departmental investigation.
Health workers alleged that the women – most of whom were from the Muslim community – were kept in an adjacent open field even before they could regain consciousness after the procedure.
“The health centre did not have the basic infrastructure that is needed for such surgeries,” a worker said.
District health officials said the camp was held by the block authorities who had kept them in the dark about it.
“We have asked for a report and also started investigation,” a district health official said.
