He was addressing a function organized by the “Ali Mian Foundation” for promoting ‘Seerat’ or the true path of Islam at the historic Kennedy Auditorium, Aligarh Muslim University late yesterday night.

Maulana Rabey Nadvi, who is also the President of the All India Muslim Personal Law Board, said that it was imperative for the Muslim youth to “fully understand the humanitarian teachings” which formed the bedrock of the Islamic faith as propagated by the Prophet of Islam, only then they can project an honest image of the “real values of Islam”.

Maulana said that he “fully endorsed” the views expressed by Maulana Salman Nadvi on core issues related to “Islam and the true Islamic spirit”. Maulana Salman had earlier sought to remind the AMU community that it had a very critical role in propagating the “essential elements of a true follower of Islam” to the rest of the country and in fact to the whole world.

Maulana reminded the students that the essence of Islamic spirit lies in the tenet “love thy neighbor as thyself”. He said that it was imperative for every Muslim to care for his neighbor “irrespective of class, colour and creed”. He said that the followers of Islam faced turbulent times “whenever they ignored the humanitarian message which was the shining force of the Prophet of Islam’s teachings”. He said that a true follower of Islam is only he “whose entire demeanor is that of an ideal citizen and a good human being”.

He said that the founder of AMU, Sir Syed Ahmad Khan, had always expressed the view that the role of this institution was to inculcate certain values in its students which reflected “their commitment to the cause of science and modern education on one hand and true Islamic values on the other”. He said that the role of the AMU was not to just impart formal education but to produce graduates who were “ideal human beings” whose personalities reflected the highest tradition of Islamic way of thought.

The Vice Chancellor of AMU, Lt. Gen (Retired) Zameer Uddin Shah, while addressing the gathering said that he was fully aware of the onerous responsibilities on his shoulders for living up to the expectations of the founding fathers of this institution regarding the timbre and excellence in the levels of its products.

Shah said that he would strive his best for promoting a system which reflects the very best in the rich traditions of the institution’s past and the challenges of the future.
