The attack, in which a policeman was injured, came just two days after leftist insurgents opened fire and damaged an Indian Air Force Mi-17 chopper in Bastar region when it tried to airlift a few injured policemen.

“Maoists fired several shots from close range at police station at around 3 a.m. for about 30 minutes and tested our security preparedness. The alert cops retaliated strongly and forced Maoists to retreat,” Bastar district police chief B.N. Meena told IANS over phone.

He said that constable Dharmendra Kunjam was injured in the attack while police believed that a few Maoists too had received gun shots in the retaliatory firing.

The injured cop was taken to a government hospital in Jagdalpur and then referred to Raipur. His condition was reported to be out of danger.

Officials at police headquarters said that security has been beefed up as a precautionary measure across Bastar region which is made up of seven districts.
