Kolkata: Kolkata’s Metro Railway carried a record number of 1401.79 lakh passengers in the first nine months of fiscal 2012-13, registering a growth of 13.41 percent over the corresponding year ago period when it bore 1236.05 lakh, a top official said here Saturday.
Its earnings also went up by 4.82 percent to Rs.7215.28 lakh in the April-December period of the ongoing financial year, as compared to the figure in the same period of 2011-12, Metro Railway general manager Radhey Shyam said at the Republic Day function. His speech was read out by Metro’s chief electrical engineer B.K. Patel.
The Kolkata Metro, the country’s first underground Metro railway, got a record 7.42 lakh passengers Oct 19 last year, eclipsing its earlier highest of 7.16 lakh passengers carried on Jan 3, 2011.
Kolkata Metro started its journey Oct 24, 1984, and now carries over six lakh passengers on an average on week days over a length of 25.135 km spread in the busy north-south axis of Kolkata.
