New Delhi : Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar Wednesday expressed concern over disruptions in parliament and said there was a need to realise the power of words over the power of lungs.
Speaking at an event at the parliament library here, she said criticism of an institution for the sake of criticism cannot be justified.
She referred to unending disruptions in parliament: “We should believe in the power of words and not in the power of lungs.
“We must have in depth discussions on divergent issues and there must be a convergence of opinions after thorough deliberations.”
An official release quoted the speaker as saying that institutions like parliament have to keep evolving.
“In several countries, the parliamentary system collapsed as it could not keep pace with the rising expectations of the people.”
The function was attended by presiding officers of state legislatures and MPs. The Speaker gave away prizes to school students.
