K Rahman Khan meets British High Commissioner, discusses Equal Opportunity Commission

New Delhi: Minister of Minority Affairs K. Rahman Khan met the British High Commissioner Sir James David Bevan today.

The Minister asked the High Commissioner about functioning of Equal Opportunity Commission and Shariah Banking as practiced in the United Kingdom. Equal Opporunity Commission is one of the recommendations of the Sachar Committee Report.

Responding to Sir Bevan’s interest, the Minister mentioned that there are five notified minority communities in India, i.e. Muslims, Christians, Sikhs, Buddhists and Zoroastrians (Parsis) and various schemes and activities are undertaken for the welfare of these minorities.

The Minister further explained in detail about the various schemes being implemented by the Ministry such as Multi-sectoral Development Programme (MsDP), Scholarships to various categories and Management of Wakf Properties. He added that the Prime Minister’s 15-Point Programme provides for earmarking of certain targets and outlays for minorities in all important schemes of the Government of India for implementation in Minority Concentration Districts (MCDs).
