New Delhi : The Rajya Sabha Thursday paid tributes to former Venezuelan president Hugo Chavez, describing him as a charismatic leader and observing a minute’s silence in his memory.
As soon as the house met for the day, Chairman Hamid Ansari said he was referring to the demise of Chavez with an utmost sense of grief.
Chavez died of cancer in a military hospital in Caracas Tuesday.
“President Hugo Chavez’s indomitable spirit shone while dealing with challenging national issues as well as difficult personal circumstances. He always strived towards the betterment of underprivileged masses. India cherishes the special bond of friendship that was greatly strengthened during the charismatic leadership of President Chavez,” Ansari said.
The house observed a minute’s silence in his memory before taking up Question Hour.
