New Delhi: Of the total 998 successful candidates in the final list of the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) examinations, only 30 Muslims could make it to this year’s result. The number of Muslim candidates is almost the same as last few years.
The written part of Civil Services (Main) Examination, 2012 was held in October, 2012 and the interviews for Personality Test were conducted by the UPSC in March-April, 2013. The final result was posted on the official’s website of the UPSC on Friday.
Of the 30 successful Muslim candidates selected for the most sought after UPSC posts, four have made it to the list of top 100. Their names are: Syed Sehrish Asgar (Rank 23), Showkat Ahmad Parray (Rank 41), Khursheed Ali Qadri (Rank 95) And Jafar Malik (Rank 97).
The selected UPSC candidates are recommended for various government posts which include Indian Foreign Service (IFS), Indian Administrative Service (IAS), Indian Police Service (IPS) and several other allied services.
Although Muslims comprise 13.4% of total population, they are dismally represented in the top government services, often due to lack of education and unavailability of resources. They are roughly 2% in the civil services.
In 2012, 30 Muslims were selected, while in 2011, 31 Muslims were among the 920 successful candidates. In 2010, only 21 Muslims had made to the final list out of 875 successful candidates, although Dr. Shah Faisal from Kashmir had topped that year. In 2009, 31 were Muslims out of total 791 successful candidates.
This year more number of total candidates, 998 in all, has been selected, but the number of Muslim candidates has almost remained the same.
The performance of successful Muslim candidates is almost same in numbers if compared with the results of last few years. In 2009, a total of 31 Muslims were in the list of 791 successful candidates. Though percentage wise it shows a marginal decline.
