Addressing faculty members and students, the President stated the political freedom in a democracy carried little meaning without socio-economic justice. In India, he observed, democracy drew its strength from ideals enshrined in the constitution. He averred that the preamble to the constitution, the fundamental rights and duties and the directive principles of the state policies contained the essential ingredients of good governance. He exhorted the students to participate in the democratic processes of the nation to develop a sense of responsibility towards society. This could be achieved, he felt, by inculcating respect for rule of law and promoting values such as transparency, accountability, equity and inclusiveness. Education should aim at socio-economic betterment of the nation wherein institutions of higher learning should serve as instruments of change. Good governance, the President underlined, was not restricted to maintenance of law and order and dispensation of justice but had welfare of the people as its highest objective. It was imperative that the institutions of higher learning continue to discharge their duties efficiently to promote good governance for all-round growth of the nation.
