Army chief visits Ladakh

Udhampur (Jammu and Kashmir) : Indian Army chief General Dalbir Singh arrived in Jammu and Kashmir Sunday on a three-day visit and went to the Siachen sector that is contested by India and Pakistan.

This is his first visit to the region after taking over as army chief July 31, an official statement said.

The army chief was accompanied by Lt Gen D.S. Hooda, the head of the Northern Command, when he flew into Leh.

General Dalbir Singh visited the Siachen glacier and paid tributes to the soldiers who have died in the icy heights by laying a floral wreath at the Siachen War Memorial.

He will visit the forward posts of eastern Ladakh and review the army’s preparedness, the statement said.

The general will receive Prime Minister Narendra Modi when he visits the region Tuesday.

The army chief had a detailed interaction with his officers on the security environment, infrastructure projects and initiatives undertaken by the army in Ladakh, the statement said.

He also reviewed the logistical infrastructure available to the soldiers.
