AMU celebrates Independence Day fervently

Aligarh: Unfurling the tri-colour, bearing an emblem of growth and development, at the wide stretch in front of historical Strachey Hall, the Vice Chancellor of Aligarh Muslim University, Lt. Gen. Zameer Uddin Shah (retd.) greeted the university fraternity on the 68th Independence Day of Indian nation and highlighted his plans for a thriving and development oriented University.

Referring to his Vision Document 2020 for the comprehensive development of the university, Lt. Gen. Shah reiterated his resolve to make AMU number one University in India by 2017. He said that AMU has registered a gradual upward journey in the various rankings made by Indian and foreign agencies.

Upholding the importance and relevance of freedom of speech in a robust democratic set up, the Vice Chancellor assured all uninhibited freedom of expression. He, however, warned against misusing this right or using foul language to malign people for personal vendetta. He said that nobody needed to be afraid of anyone as he always respected the democratic values and would work to strengthen these values.

Gen. Shah announced that the elections to AMU Students’ Union will be conducted soon according to Lyngdoh Committee recommendations and he will ensure that all vacancies under student category in AMU Court are filled before the meeting of the apex body. He said that the annual convocation will also be held on October 18.

The Vice Chancellor said that his efforts to garner support and financial help from the Alumni spread all over the world, are bearing fruits. He said that a target of 100 smart classrooms has been put before the alumni, for which they are generating funds steadily.

Gen. Shah assured AMU Teachers’ Association (AMUTA) that grievances of teachers will be heard and their genuine demands will be fulfilled. He claimed that more than 50 percent vacancies in different departments have been filled through general selection committees and the rest will be completed within one year. He said that the University administration has asked all departments of studies to appoint training and placement officer to provide the students with best opportunities for career making. He said that Central Placement Office is engaged in approaching big companies and inviting them to conduct placement drive at AMU campus. He said that syllabus for different courses will be revised and updated according to the market requirements for better job prospects.

The Vice Chancellor, Lt. Gen. Zameer Uddin Shah inaugurated a Clock on the historical Victoria Gate. The clock, which has been installed on the initiative of the Vice Chancellor, is an electronic incarnation of the large mechanical clock, which was brought from United Kingdom a century ago.

The Vice Chancellor and Pro-Vice Chancellor, Brig. S. Ahmad Ali (retd.) along with their spouses visited the University Health Service and greeted the admitted student patients with fruits and wishes.

AMU Registrar, Group Captain Shahrukh Shamshad (retd.) conducted the programme. Controller of Examination, Prof. Javaid Akhtar, DSW, Prof. Anis Ismail, Proctor, Dr. Jamshd Siddiqui, Provosts of Halls of residence, teachers and students were present on the occasion.

On the eve of the Independence Day, a traditional Mushaira was also organized by the Department of Urdu at the Conference hall, Zakir Husain College of Engineering and Technology. The Vice Chancellor presided over the Mushaira proceddings.
