New Delhi/Aligarh: Tributes have poured in from across the country from prominent personalities, social organizations and educational institutions to condole the death of Saiyid Hamid, educationist and Chancellor of Delhi’s Jamia Hamdard.
Hamid, also the former VC of Aligarh Muslim University (AMU), died on Monday here after a prolonged illness.

Terming Hamid as a pillar of the Muslim community and that his death is a great loss for the country and community, Dr Zafarul-Islam Khan, president of the All India Muslim Majlise Mushawarat, the umbrella body of Indian Muslim organizations, said: “His tenure as VC of AMU is well-known but a lesser known fact is that it was through his untiring efforts that the Jamia Hamdard was recognised by Government of India as a ‘deemed university’, which paved the way to the progress that was witnessed later.”
SQR Ilyas, national president of the Welfare Party of India, too offered tributes on Hamid’s death.
At Aligarh, Vice Chancellor Lt General Zameer Uddin Shah (retd), pro-Vice Chancellor Brigadier Syed Ahmad Ali (retd), Registrar Dr Asfar Ali Khan and other senior faculty members and students attended a condolence meeting held on Tuesday.
Paying rich tributes, Lt Gen Shah said Hamid was a man of courage, man of wisdom and totally dedicated to the cause of education. Reading out a condolence resolution, Shah said: “Hamid joined as the AMU Vice Chancellor on June 10, 1980 and played a key role in stream lining affairs of the University. He revived the monthly magazine, Tahzeebul Akhlaq, started by Sir Syed Ahmad Khan and launched the new Hindi Magazine, Nishant. During his tenure as the Vice Chancellor, Saiyid Hamid formulated policies for the development of the University, which made rapid progress in every field. The third AMU Amendment Act, 1981 was implemented during his vice Chancellorship.”
Highlighting Hamid’s contributions, AMU PRO Dr Rahat Abrar said: “To promote educational awareness among Indian Muslims, Saiyid Hamid started ‘All India Taalimi Karwan’ in 1992. With other Muslim intellectuals, he visited different parts of the country, especially in areas of significant Muslim population, and made a passionate appeal to Muslims to focus on education for the development of the community and nation building.”
Prof Pervez Talib of the Business Administration Department and CMO, Dr Shariq Aqil also paid rich tributes to the former Vice Chancellor.
At Aligarh’s Jamia Urdu Aligarh, Mushawarti Council Chairman Prof Razaullah Khan, while chairing a condolence meeting, said he not only served the AMU in an effective manner but has contributed much in spreading education among deprived sections of Indian society in various parts of country.
He recalled that the biggest contribution of Syed Hamid is that he had founded a free coaching at Delhi for IAS aspirants with an aim that the children belonging to lower start of society may enter prestigious Indian Admistration Service.
Registrar, Shamoon Raza Naqvi and Director, Dr Jasim Mohammad too spoke on the occasion. “He was truly a Sir Syed follower and his life and works clearly depicts that,” Jasim Mohammad said.
