New Delhi: The Department of Physics at Jamia Millia Islamia is organizing the XI Abdus Salam Memorial Lecture on 17th February, 2014 at 3.30 p.m. in the Auditorium, Faculty of Engineering & Technology, Jamia Millia Islamia.

The XI Abdus Salam Memorial Lecture shall be delivered by Prof. Subodh R. Shenoy, from the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, Hyderabad on “How Does a System Re-equilibrate After Sudden Cooling”.

The Abdus Salam Memorial Lecture is an annual feature in the Department of Physics and is for continuing the ideas of encouraging education and research in fundamental sciences in developing countries, floated and implemented by Prof. Abdus Salam, Nobel Laureate in Physics. The Abdus Salam memorial lecture, started by the Department of Physics, Jamia Millia Islamia, New Delhi, tries to perpetuate the ideas that Salam believed in; namely the need for developing countries to encourage education and research in the fundamental sciences. An eminent person of science in invited each year to deliver this lecture. The style and content of the lectures is such as to inspire and convey the excitement of new discoveries, ideas and challenges.

Prof. Shenoy has a B.Sc. Degree from the University of London, and M.Phil. and Ph.D. degree from Yale University. He has worked at TIFR Bombay (1974-75); the Institute of Physics, Bhubaneswar (1975-77); the University of Hyderabad (1977-96); and the University of Hyderabad (1977-1996): and the International Centre for Theoretical Physics (1994-2005), where he was Coordinator of the ICTP Diploma Course in Condensed Matter Physics.

He is an elected Fellow of the Indian Academy of Sciences; an Alexander von Humboldt Fellow, an Invited Lecture at Troiseme Cycle de la Physique of the Swiss Universities Consortium; and a Consultant at Los Alamos National Lab. He was awarded the prestigious Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize in Physical Sciences in 1992. He has been a Visiting Professor at the University of Hyderabad (2006-2010); the Indian institute of Science Education and Research, Trivandrum (2010-2013); and presently is a Visiting Professor at TIFR-Hyderabad.
