The new ministers took the oath of office yesterday during a parliament session. Among those sworn in were Ali Al-Omair, a pro-government Islamist who was named oil minister, and the only woman in the Cabinet, Hend Al-Sabeeh, who became minister of social affairs and planning. The previous Cabinet resigned last month amid plans by legislators to submit a number of ministers to parliamentary grilling. Several former ministers were reappointed to their previous posts. Kuwait allows the most politically vibrant culture in the Gulf. Opposition lawmakers have a powerful forum in parliament, often summoning officials for questioning.
