New Delhi: Hosting of political iftar parties in Delhi was started by Indira Gandhi in 1980. For the first time in twenty-four years , Prime Minister or a Union minister will not be hosting an iftar party, a sign of new political bosses in occupying seats of power in Delhi.

However, President of India Pranab Mukherjee not only hosted an iftar on Monday July 21st but also participated in the dua held on the occasion of khatm of complete recital of Quran in President’s Estate Masjid. According to the press release by Rashtrapati Bhavan, the President prayed for “good health and prosperity for all.”

Interestingly enough there was no press release for the iftar party hosted by the President. From the photos available of President’s iftar it seems Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh and Minister of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution Ram Vilas Paswan were the only government ministers present. No sign of the Prime Minister Narendra Modi or the Vice President Hamid Ansari can be found in the photos.
This scribe could not find any authentic reference to the history of the President’s Estate Masjid.
