Cultural Counsellor of Iraq Embassy in India visits AMU

Aligarh: Prof. Dr. Dhirgham Alkhafaji, Cultural A. Counsellor at the Embassy of the Republic of Iraq, New Delhi today visited the Aligarh Muslim University and met Lt. Gen. (Retd.) Zameer Uddin Shah, Vice Chancellor and Brigadier (Retd.) Syed Ahmad Ali, Pro-Vice Chancellor. He discussed the various issues pertaining to academic exchange and cooperation between AMU and different universities of Iraq.

Prof. Alkhafaji also expressed desire to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with AMU for cooperation and support in academic exchange programmes.

Prof. Alkhafaji said that Iraq government has granted recognition to barely a two dozen institutions of higher learning of India and the Aligarh Muslim University figures prominently in this list. He said that the present Vice President of Iraq is an alumnus of this historical seat of learning.

He said that the higher education department of Iraq government provides scholarships and fellowships to about ten thousand students who seek to acquire education abroad. He said that his government would like AMU to provide admission to Iraqi students in a large number and his government would extend all financial assistance to these students.

AMU Vice Chancellor, Lt. Gen. (retd.) Zameer Uddin Shah welcomed the proposal and said that he was also making efforts to increase number of foreign students in the University. He said that our students would be ambassadors of peace all over the world.

The Iraqi Cultural Counsellor visited different buildings of historical important and inspected the Maulana Azad Library and the department of Chemistry where he met the Iraqi research scholar Abdul Sattar.
