New Delhi: A fact-finding team Saturday urged the central government to take cognizance of the victims of an ethnic clash who are staying in camps in Assam’s Karbi Anglong and ensure accountability for the violence.
Submitting a report on the poor living conditions of survivors in rehabilitation camps after the 2012 ethnic clash, the team demanded the government to provide adequate compensation to the victims.
The group consists of journalists and academicians from the northeastern states.
“Cadres of the Karbi People’s Liberation Tigers (KPLT) are creating differences among the people staying in rehabilitation camps,” said Rosemary Dzuvichu, professor of Nagaland University and a member of the fact-finding team.
The team also submitted the report to the Assam government and sought a judicial inquiry against the autonomous councils in the district, who were given money by the state government to stablise the situation.
“The sequence of happenings in the rehabilitation camps clearly states that instability in the area is something done by militants who want a separate state,” Sukumar Muralidharan, another member of the team, told IANS.
“Despite assurances given by the Assam government to stabilise the situation, ministers have only visited the area and made promises. So we want the central government to take concrete steps to bring peace in the camps,” he added.
