Indian Muslim Relief & Charity (IMRC), an active non-government organization, has grounded in Kashmir to realize real time damages suffered in the region due to havocking floods and to help the much needed victims of the tragedy. It has been learned by the IMRC team that the destruction caused is much higher than anticipated or as projected and that there is immense need of relief work all around.
In its first day of reporting IMRC team reported over 5 Million are affected, some with wounds uncared for, lost family members and villages completely washed away. Victims are stranded without any means of access to leave unless help arrives. There’s so much destruction and most of the people are in severe stress. They have lost everything even hope for their future.
IMRC team is working around the clock to distribute as many materials as possible to the victims. Its medical camp is providing immunization shots, wound care, blankets, hygiene kits and food. However, supplies are short and the victims wait for further help.
The greater concern for every relief proving groups in Kashmir including IMRC is that when waters recede, there will be a high risk of disease, infection and illnesses spreading. To counter any illness after water recession adequate medicines must be in place.
IMRC’s Project Manager noted when he visited 10-12 locations that most of the rescue and relief work is being done by daring local youth, using drums, rubber tubes etc to float anything that they can lay their hands on. He spotted only two real boats there.
“The victims I met in general had praises for local youth and Indian military. Somehow the victims had a bad opinion about the insensitive media. Food was being brought by people from surrounding areas/villages to serve the victims. Saw some fire engines as well. There’s a lack of boats which is much needed now. But unfortunately, by the time they are procured the waters are expected to go down Insha’Allah”, quoted IMRC project manager.
“Tengpurais known to be home for the poor. 900 families in this area are affected and devastated. Red Cross has installed 65 tents of 12×12 sizes. These poor people were so conscious of other victims; I was told they have been saving a fistful of rice every time they get some donation. For other victims nearby who have no access to emergency relief”, he added.
IMRC has called upon people to actively take part in the relief work and appealed that the people in the villages are a proud kind who will never accept doles and will never become dependent on aid and therefore a long term solution must be chalked out once Phase I of providing food, water and medicine is complete so that people in the villages get back on their own.
IMRC has listed following as an urgent need in present relief work:
1. Continue Relief of Phase I: Provide food, water & medicine
2. Provide Emergency & Warm Clothes Kits
3. Materials to keep their tents/homes warm
4. Makeshift clinics with ambulances or vehicles to transport patients.
In its appeal IMRC says “Help reach those who are shocked and suffering through this sudden tragedy, please DONATE generously. (https://www.imrcusa.org/donate/)
