Doha: As many as 2,792 complaints, including labour law violations, have been received by the Indian mission in Qatar so far this year, a media report said Saturday.
During a community house Friday, Indian Ambassador to Qatar Sanjiv Arora, along with other senior officials, assured the complainants of further follow-up with the local authorities and necessary action, The Gulf Times reported.
According to the embassy, at least 85 Indian nationals are currently serving varied sentences in Qatar’s central prison and 143 others, awaiting repatriation, are housed at the deportation centre.
In the previous years, 3,385 (2012) and 3,558 (2013) complaints were received by the Indian embassy’s labour and community welfare section.
The embassy registered a total number of 204 deaths so far this year. In 2012, the embassy registered 237 deaths while 241 deaths were reported last year.
The mission facilitated the repatriation of 64 Indian nationals from the Qatari deportation centre till now.
The Indian Community Benevolent Fund continues to help the needy and deserving workers through various welfare measures, including provision of air tickets, financial assistance and medical help.
The embassy said it has been discussing various issues, including cases with humanitarian dimensions, with the authorities in Qatar, the report stated.
Qatar is home to around 600,000 expatriate Indians, many of them blue collar workers.
