Hyderabad: “Nothing moves without power and power doesn’t move without engineers.”
As cogent and riveting as it sounds, India’s youngest state will need 30,000 to 40,000 engineers to meet the fast-growing demand for power supply and generation. Feeding on the Chief Minister Chandrashekar Rao’s promises to provide uninterrupted power supply, the state government has decided to give its power mill a 6000 MW boost.
“There may be technical problems or minute operational glitches, but power cuts will be history in the
state,” said D Prabhakar Rao, chairman and managing director, TS GENCO. The power generation capacity will be more than doubled, resulting in an exponential increase in demand for engineers, he said.
Addressing the engineering students on the commencement day of Muffakham Jah College of Engineering and Technology here, Rao said, “The state currently employs nearly 12,000 engineers for 4365 MW power. It will need 20,000 to 22,000 engineers for more power.”
Projects such as Mission Kakatiya, Water Grid project, etc will need engineers from various disciplines for perfect execution. “And these engineers could be from multifarious disciplines, not just Information Technology,” he added.
Meanwhile, Srinivas Reddy, vice president (Hardware), Wipro Technologies for India, stressed that the changing dynamics of the competitive corporate world warrants fast-paced execution of projects and shorter life cycles. “The world has no patience for longer product cycles,” he observed urging the students “to be quick-paced and qualitative in materialising new ideas and innovations in the age of digital economy.”
Zafar Javeed, secretary, Sultan ul Uloom Education Society (SUES), advised the students “to be ignited with inspiration and nothing can be achieved without perspiration.” He urged the students to conceive their sojourn at college as a life-changing opportunity.
Khan Lateef Khan, SUES chairman, Mohammed Waliullah, vice chairman, Dr Mir Akbar Ali Khan, treasurer, Nisar Ahmed, joint secretary, Mohammed Jaffar, S A Wahab, Amir Javeed, Dr Anupama Koneru and TSSPDCL director (Operations) Srinivas Reddy were also present on this occasion.
Dr Basheer Ahmed, advisor cum director, MJCET delivered the welcome address.
