Jammu : Jammu and Kashmir Governor N.N. Vohra Sunday visited a camp in Jammu and Kashmir’s Kathua district where people displaced from border villages following Pakistan shelling are lodged.
Accompanied by senior officials, the governor visited the Hiranagar camp where around 60 families are staying.
“The governor took stock of the problems faced by the families who had to abandon their homes because of shelling by Pakistan Rangers,” an official told IANS, adding Vohra ordered free ration and other facilities for them.
More than 10,000 people were forced to abandon homes after Pakistan Rangers resorted to indiscriminate shelling of civilian habitations close to the international border in Samba and Kathua districts of Jammu region this month.
Vohra also stopped at other places en route to the camp to interact with people gathered on the highway to appraise him of their problems.
This was his first field visit after he imposed Governor’s role in Jammu and Kashmir, taking over the administrative affairs in the state.
After no single party came forward to stake claim on government formation in the state following a fractured mandate in assembly elections, Governor’s rule was clamped Jan 8.
Raj Bhavan sources told IANS the governor has decided not to appoint any advisors to help him run day-to-day administrative affairs.
“He has taken over direct control of all the portfolios held previously by the chief minister including home and general administrative,” a source said.
“All other portfolios will be handled by the chief secretary who will take final orders from the governor,” the source added.
