There are over two lakh university and college teachers in the country.

Professor Jagwant Singh, an AIFUCTO member and general secretary of the Punjab Federation of the University and College Teachers Organisations (PFUCTO), told IANS that the protest follows the government’s failure to even appoint a pay review committee for university and college teachers under the Seventh Pay Commission.

“While the Seventh Pay Commission (for central government staff) has concluded its consultation with the organizations of central government employees, the HRD ministry has not even appointed a review committee,” he said.

“Teachers of most universities and colleges in majority of the states will participate in the protest. Teachers are concerned about the new pay scales,” Singh said.

Other demands include scrapping of the Academic Performance Indicators, rollback of ‘Choice-Based Credit System’ and consultation with teachers on issues related to education.
