Myanmar releases 17 detained students

Yangon : Seventeen students, who were detained in Myanmar for taking part in protests and demanded education reforms in Latpadan town, have been released.

According to official reports, of the 127 people detained at Letpadan, only 65 were students and the remaining 62 included activists, family members and people supporting students’ demand to amend the new education law, The Myanmar Times reported on Friday.

Authorities released 17 of the students without any charge on Thursday night, and 10 more would be released later on Friday, a police official said.

The arrests followed after police launched a crackdown on students who attempted to push through barricades on Tuesday in order to continue their march in Letpadan.
