Death of a Muslim woman in police station and her missing son

By TCN News,

Hyderabad: Blaming the insensitive local police for the alleged suicide of a woman from a poor family from Doma area in Rangareddy district and inaction in finding her missing son, the Civil Liberties Monitoring Committee (CLMC) has demanded the DGP of Telangana to set up a special team to find out the whereabouts of the missing youth Mohammad Muqtar and ensure safety of his life.

The CLMC has also demanded stringent action against a tainted sub-inspector of the Doma police station, claiming that the poor widow Raheema Bee was prompted to commit suicide.

Raheema Bee

A fact finding team sent by the CLMC sent to Doma police station area found that due to continuous torture of a sub-inspector, Raheema Bee was forced to commit suicide; she was unable to bear the insult and humiliation of her family.

Raheema’s son Muqtar had a love affair with a Hindu girl, whose family lodged a complaint against Muqtar about rape and kidnapped on February 14. The police sub-inspector and his team regularly tortured Raheema’s family and also called them to police stations. The girl later returned but there was no signs of Muqtar after which Raheema went to police station to file a missing persons report on March 3 but the sub-inspector refused to even lodge a complaint and subsequent FIR. She also lodged a complaint with the state human rights commission.

Later when she went to the police station again, it was then that he abused, manhandled and insulted Raheema Bee, so much so that she committed suicide right there at the police station by consuming pesticides. Her daughters and other relatives took her to a hospital but she died on April 3, 2015.

“The level of torture was double on her as she was a Muslim woman. The claim of police being people friendly is not true. On the ground level it is not reality, it should be brought to reality,” it said.

“There are lots of corruption charges on the Sub-Inspector Prem Kumar, the locals said that he has taken Rs one lakh from the girl’s family members. Even the Doma police station police personnel were fed up with him as he harassed them as well. The police department is also in an embarrassing position due to Prem Kumar’s acts,” the team report said.

“The sub-inspector Prem Kumar is such a notorious officer that he made the whole family suffer through his harassment and torture both mentally and physically. Instead of solving the case, he made it more complicated,” the team concluded.

The CLMC hence demanded that the family of Raheema Bee/Haseena Bee be compensated adequately and a government job should be provided to one of the family members.

Further pointing out that there is no women police personnel in the police stations of rural areas, the team has demanded immediate measures be taken to appoint women police at all the police stations.
The CLMC has also come down heavily on the Muslim politicians, intellectuals, socio-religious organizations, none of which came forward to help such poor families. “In this changing scenario, these organisations, these politicians and intellectuals should come forward and think to make a strategy to protect the life and liberty of the community,” the release added.
