Delhi CM distributes compensation cheques to farmers

New Delhi : Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Friday launched the Gajendra Singh Kisan Sahayata Yojana here by distributing compensation cheques to Delhi farmers whose crops were destroyed by recent unseasonal rains.

The process began from Bawana in Delhi in the presence of family members of late Gajendra Singh, a farmer from Rajasthan who committed suicide during an Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) rally at the Jantar Mantar here on April 22 — depressed over his failed crop.

The Delhi cabinet on May 1 approved the scheme and the formula for payment of compensation to the farmers.

It was decided that farmers whose entire crop had been destroyed would be paid Rs.20,000 per acre and farmers whose crop loss was assessed to be below 70 percent would get a minimum compensation of Rs.14,000 per acre.
