Aligarh: The Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) held a condolence meeting on Wednesday at the Faculty of Arts to mourn the sad demise of Professor D Murthy, Department of Modern Indian Languages. Prof Murthy passed away due to a renal failure at the Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College, AMU.
Remembering Prof Murthy for his dedication and hard work, the AMU Vice Chancellor, Lt General Zameer Uddin Shah (Veteran) said that he met Prof Murthy on several occasions and the meetings always left him highly impressed.
“Prof Murthy always wanted to serve the mankind and that the fact his body will be given to a medical college for research shows the spirit of service to humanity, which was there in Prof Murthy,” said the Vice Chancellor.
He pointed out that however, a committee has been set up to investigate the facts in which Prof Murthy passed away and necessary actions will be taken accordingly.
In the conclusion of the condolence message, General Shah said, “May good Lord, keep his soul in peace.”
AMU Pro Vice Chancellor, Brigadier S Ahmad Ali (Veteran) said that he found the body of the deceased warm on touching the forehead, 25 minutes after he was declared dead. “I immediately inquired, but the doctor said that his body was warm because of a high temperature, he was suffering in his last hours,” said the Pro Vice Chancellor adding that Prof Murthy passed away due to a renal failure.
Brigadier Ali further said that he came across students from financially week-backgrounds, who told him that Prof Murthy used to pay their fees and guide them for academic excellence. He also announced that since Prof Murthy wanted to a get a tube-well fixed in the lawns of the Department of Modern Indian Languages, as a tribute to him, the tube-well work will be done as soon as possible.
Professor Javaid Akhter, Registrar, AMU said that Prof Murthy always use to speak his mind and he will always be remembered for his smiling face. He added that Prof Murthy was humble and a very down to earth person, who was passionate about helping the people in need.
Professor Shaikh Mastan, Dean, Faculty of Arts said it is impossible to fill the void left by Prof Murthy’s demise. “It is a sad day for the University, we have not only lost a teacher but a wonderful human being, who met everyone with love and respect,” said Prof Mastan.
Prof Mohd Zahid, Department of Urdu said that he had known Prof Murthy for many years and that he will always cherish the memories of all the meetings and discussions with him.
Reading the ‘Condolence Message’, Prof Imitiyaz Hasnain said that AMU has lost one of the most admired and devoted teachers and scholars. He added that Prof Murthy has lived an exemplary life dedicated to the teaching of Tamil to non-Tamil learners and had tirelessly worked for the advancement of Tamil in the non-Tamil heartland.
