The leader of Bhim Army, Chandrashekhar ‘Ravan’ may be in jail, but if you believe that this will lead to the demise of Bhim Army, you would be wrong. Extremely wrong. In fact, thanks to a letter written by Chandrashekar from jail, his and the Army’s popularity is reaching new heights and the Dalit youth, who are his biggest fans, are comparing him to Bhagat Singh and his famous letter from prison.

The letter, titled “A message from jail to my Bahujan friends and Bhim Army members from their brother Chandrashekhar”, has been circulated among millions and is proving to be a catalyst in increasing Bhim Army’s popularity not only in Uttar Pradesh but beyond it also.

“What I wish to convey through this letter is very important. I am grateful: to people who came to Delhi twice to show our strength to the entire world, to the people who offered help. To all these people, I welcome and thank from the bottom of my heart. You showed to the world that a community that has been divided for so many centuries can get together to fight for justice and self respect…our unity is causing a lot of discomfort to a lot of people…to people who have a cheap mentality; ones who wish to treat humans as animals,” he says in his letter.

Continuing in his letter, Chandrashekhar made it clear that the Bhim Army was neither against a person nor a religion. “Our fight to against people who practice untouchability and casteism. To them, I say ‘Change your mentality soon’ as Babasaheb Ambedkar had told Mr Gandhi that the 20th century might belong to him (Gandhi) but the 21st century will be a time for our ideology. With your support, I am confident we can implement Babasaheb’s vision. A lot of people will try to break our unity by making allegations, but we must stay together,” he says.

Explaining why the Bhim Army’s national-level committee was dismissed, Chandrashekhar said, “Because of the selfish nature of some people, the sacrifices and sufferings of some people were underestimated. You are all my family now; we do not need any committee and I will never let you down again. I remember you all and the love I have got in UP, Uttarakhand and Punjab.”

In the postscript, Chandrashekhar added a word of caution and confidence to his readers, especially youth. “In my absence, I expect you to understand your responsibilities and fight for justice in all constitutional ways possible,” he added.

Chandrashekhar is currently in jail with over 12 charges against him and over the past month, the UP government has tried to tarnish
