Former president of Egypt dies in court during trial

Mohammed Morsi, former president and an Islamist leader of the Muslim brotherhood, Egypt’s first freely elected leader dies on Monday collapsed in a courtroom in Cairo and died after being taken to the hospital.

Mohammed Morsi, 67 years, had just finished his statement in the trial on espionage charges against him.

Morsi was elected as the president in the country’s first democratic elections in 2012 after ousting longtime leader Hosni Mubarak. However Morsi, just after one year, as the president was ousted by the Military, led by the defense minister, in 2013 and was arrested along with thousands of his followers who were part of the Brotherhood. The Muslim Brotherhood was also fragmented by the military, and labeling it as a ‘terrorist organisation’ thus putting an end to democracy that had just begun in Egypt.

Mohammed Morsi was charged with espionage for leading a rebellion that put an end to the 3 decade rule of Hosni Mubarak. He was kept in the prison in deplorable condition denied of medical care.

He was first sentenced to death later the sentence was overturned and sentenced to 20 years of imprisonment.

His family and members of the Brotherhood suspect he was murdered though the Egyptian government said there is no foul play and that Morsi died due to heart attack.

He was buried in Nasr city, Cairo as the Egyptian authorities did not allow the burial to take place in his home province.

Rulers of Turkey and Qatar who are allies of the Muslim Brotherhood offered their condolences.

“I first of all I wish God’s mercy for our martyred brother Morsi,” Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said, adding “The West has always been silent in the face of these executions by Sisi,” Turkish state news agency Anadolu reported.

His son posted “In front of God, my father, we shall meet. “on his face book.

Meanwhile in Hyderabad, a ghayebna Namaz-e-janaza is being held today evening for Dr. Mohammed Morsi at Masjid-e-Azizia.
