Bibi, who lives in a small village of Uttar Pradesh’s Ghazipur district, had for long been seeking help from the administration. But things changed for her only when Chief Minister Mayawati took note of her troubles a few days ago.

“I had written to the administration a number of times this month to arrange a meeting with the president so that I can narrate my woes to her. I am thankful to the chief minister who came forward to help me,” Bibi, who reached Lucknow Monday, told reporters.

Besides sanctioning Rs.500,000 for repair of her house, Mayawati has also instructed the Varanasi administration to make sure that Bibi undergoes a much-needed eye operation at a good hospital.

The state government has also sanctioned Rs.1 million for building a park in Ghazipur in Abdul Hameed’s memory.

“Bibi will be meeting the president at 6 p.m. (Tuesday) in the Raj Bhawan,” principal secretary Vijay shanker Pandey told IANS.

She will also be attending the convocation of the Lucknow University where President Patil will be the chief guest.

After attending the convocation, Patil is scheduled to meet Uttar Pradesh Governor T.V. Rajeswar at the Raj Bhawan and will be staying there Tuesday, Pandey added.
