New Delhi: Under the intensified security arrangement, Eid prayer was offered at dozens of mosques and Idgahs here in New Delhi and in most parts of the country peacefully today.
Like past, hundreds of people offered the Eid prayer at the mosque of Jamia Millia Islamia in the presence of heavy security.
A number of people were seen with black badge showing their sorrow on the Batla House encounter in which, they say, two innocents were killed. The police described them as suspected terrorists. Inspector Mohan Chand Sharma was also killed in the shootout. Following the encounter more than a dozen people were arrested from the Jamia Nagar area in connection with the Delhi bombing. Among them two are Jamia students. The university has declared them innocent and genuine student of the university and decided to extend legal aid to them.
At the entrance of the Jamia mosque and at some other places in the vicinity some donations boxes were kept. The boxes read: Students’ Legal Aid Fund. Some students were carrying those boxes after the Eid prayer. A number of people were seen dropping cash in the boxes. This showed that the overwhelming majority of the locals do not believe the police version of the encounter or their allegations about the arrested ones including Jamia students.
In the wake of Delhi serial bombings on September 13 followed by Jamia Nagar encounter and a fresh series of bomb blasts – Mehrauli (New Delhi), Modasa (Gujarat) Malegaon (Maharashtra) and in Tripura – security was beefed up at religious places.
Thousands of people offered Eid prayer at Delhi’s Jama Masjid and several other mosques and Idgahs in Delhi.
