New York : Rabbi Marvin Hier, who heads one of the foremost Jewish human rights agency in the world, has demanded a special session of the United Nations General Assembly to counter “suicide terrorism” in view of the horrific terror attacks in Mumbai where a Jewish centre was also targetted.
“This is another wake-up call to the international community that it must finally deal with Islamic terror – the great crime of the 21st century which threatens all of us,” said Hier, founder and dean of the Los Angeles-based Simon Wiesenthal Center.
Established in 1977, the center is now one of the largest international Jewish human rights organisations with over 400,000 member families in the US.
Known as one of the most influential Jewish leaders in the world, Hier said the General Assembly of the UN deals with many important issues but continues to ignore suicide terror.
“The time has come for the UN to move beyond the objections of the Muslim member-states and to convene a special session to deal with this plague,” Hier said in a statement from Los Angeles.
The Los Angeles Times quoted Hier as saying that the terrorists were not just delivering a message to the Indian government, but also sending a message to America and London and to Jews and Israel.
The terrorists laid siege to two luxury hotels and a multi-storey building, known as Nariman House or Chabad House, where many Israelis were taken hostage, including a rabbi and his wife. Five bodies were found by the commandos at Chabad House.
