Islamabad : The Pakistani government moved Thursday to close down the offices of the Jamaat-ud-Dawa, a front organisation for the terror outfit Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), which is blamed by India for the attacks in Mumbai, after the UN declared it a terrorist group.
The government placed the chief of Jamaat-ud-Dawa (JuD) Hafiz Muhammad Saeed under house arrest for a period of three months Thursday and the police have been deployed at the headquarters of Jamat-ud-Dawa in Lahore, the capital city of eastern Punjab province.
Advisor to the prime minister on interior affairs Rehman Malik said the government has banned the group Jamat-ud-Dawa.
The Dawn News TV channel quoted Malik as saying that the interior ministry has ordered concerned departments to monitor its movement and seal the group’s offices across the country.
The government has started clamping down on offices of the JuD and other banned outfits across the country after the UN Security Council Thursday declared the organisation a terrorist group, Geo TV reported.
The assets of JuD and nine of its leaders have been frozen, a senior government official said, and their names will also be placed on the exit control list to prevent them from leaving the country, the channel said.
The regional offices of Jamaat have been sealed in Karachi, Hyderabad, Islamabad, Rawalpindi and Pakistani Kashmir.
