Sania, making a comeback after recovering from a chronic wrist injury and ranked at lowly 108, broke Marta thrice in the first set to wrap it up in mere 25 minutes.

Marta, last year’s pre-quarterfinalist and ranked 61, came better in the second set, breaking the Hyderabadi twice. But a series of unforced errors (23) from the Polish as compared to Sania’s 13, gave the Indian the opportunity to snare her serve thrice, and to close the match in little over an hour.

Sania next plays Russian tenth seed Nadia Petrova who overcame a late challenge from Kazakh Yaroslava Shvedova to win 6-3, 7-6 (3). Nadia and Sania are levelled at 1-1 with the 26-year-old Russian winning in their previous meeting at the Wimbledon last year.
