London : Manchester United midfielder Paul Scholes has made a quicker return to fitness than expected after playing in the 4-0 friendly win over Dunfermline.
The 32-year-old Scholes was injured during a pre-season game against FC Seoul in United’s Asian tour and returned to England for exploratory knee operation.
But Scholes was in a United team Wednesday night at East End Park, that also marked the club debut for summer signing Owen Hargreaves.
Scholes’ involvement means he could play against Reading at Old Trafford Sunday.
United coach Mike Phelan told the United website: “Paul has worked really hard, his injury is fine and he’s in contention for the weekend.”
Another United side ran out 3-0 winners against Glentoran in Belfast also on Wednesday night.
Cristiano Ronaldo was not included in either squad but the winger is expected to shake off a minor ankle knock in time for the Premiership opener.
