New Delhi : India will observe seven-day state mourning as a mark of respect to former president R. Venkataraman who died here Tuesday, an official statement said.
“As a mark of respect to former president R. Venkataraman, seven-day state mourning will be observed throughout India from January 27, 2009 to February 2 2009,” the home ministry said in the statement.
During the period of state mourning, the national flag will fly at half mast on all buildings throughout India where it is flown regularly and there will be no official entertainment, it said.
Venkataraman, 98, died at the Army Research and Referral Hospital here at 2.30 p.m. after prolonged illness.
