London : Tens of thousands of Tamils held a mass demonstration in central London Saturday to protest the anti-insurgency army action in Sri Lanka, which they say has left ordinary civilians facing a humanitarian disaster.
Organisers said the number of demonstrators was “well over 50,000”.
The protesters later submitted a petition to Prime Minister Gordon Brown at Downing Street, calling for Britain to persuade Sri Lankan forces to declare an immediate ceasefire, to be monitored by the international community.
This, they say, should be followed by peace negotiations and “immediate humanitarian relief”.
