Chennai : Armed police personnel moved into position in cities across Tamil Nadu Saturday as shoot-at-sight orders were issued to quell stone pelting, arsonist mobs following three days of clashes between protesting lawyers and the police.
The Director General of Police K.P. Jain ordered shoot at sight orders Saturday. The protesting lawyers had burnt vehicles and damaged property to demand action against “police excesses”.
Meanwhile, eight police superintendents and a joint commissioner here were transferred with immediate effect, an official press statement said.
During the past three days, the high court campus had been tense after a clash between lawyers protesting against the central and state governments’ alleged inaction in the Lankan Tamil tangle, and the police.
Over 200 lawyers were arrested Friday.
“We have tightened security after the unsavoury incidents earlier this week in the high court and elsewhere in the state. No chances will be taken and any activity deemed remotely anti-national will be dealt with strictly,” DGP Jain told IANS.
Meanwhile, movie director Seeman arrested on charges of inciting violence was brought to Puducherry from Tirunelveli and remanded to 14 days’ judicial custody by a court, police sources said.
Law students belonging to the PDK tried to stage demonstrations outside the court in Puducherry, but were chased away, police sources added on phone.
