New Delhi: The doctors at J N Medical College were left baffled when they found a 20-year-old woman possessing a male sex organ and testes instead of a uterus and ovaries. She was operated upon, testes were removed and a functional vaginal canal was created by a team of doctors led by Dr. Arshad Hafeez Khan, Chairman, Department of Plastic Surgery at the college.
The woman, Seema (not her real name) belonging to a nearby village was brought to Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College after being discovered that she did not qualify as a woman and was suffering from an “ambiguous genitalia” disorder described by the doctors at J N medical College as “partial androgen insensitivity syndrome,” said Zeeshan Ahmad, Assistant Public Relations Officer, AMU.
Dr. Arshad Hafeez Khan, Chairman, Department of Plastic Surgery said that the rare physical disorder in Seema was discovered when she was married and the very next day her husband returned her to her father’s house. The aggrieved family brought Seema to J N Medical College. Dr. Arshad Hafeez Khan along with Dr. Manal Mohammad Khan and Dr. Moinuddin of Department of Plastic Surgery operated upon Seema and succeeded in removing the testes and creating a functional vaginal canal. Besides, the male organ was transformed into a clitoris. Some important female hormone drugs were also administered on Seema in order to develop the female organs in her. Dr. Khan pointed out that now Seema could lead a successful sexual life, however she would not be able to conceive.
