New Delhi: It was not Popular Front of India but the Hindu extremist organization Sri Rama Sene and the Bharatiya Janata Party government in Karnataka that are responsible for the communal violence in Udayagiri in July this year, says fact-finding report by civil rights groups.

A fact-finding team led by V Lakshminarayan, general secretary of the People’s Union of Civil Liberties (PUCL), Rathi Rao of Samatha Mahila Vedike, Prof Pattabhirama Somayaji and KL Ashok of Forum for Communal Harmony has come out with their fact-finding report giving a clean chit to Popular Front of India and holding Sri Rama Sene and BJP government in the state responsible for the violence and riots in Udayagiri in July this year.

The team have in their 7-point final observation pointed out the cause of the violence and have suggested recommendations that include strict action against Sri Rama Sene and its leader Pramod Muthalik.

According to the report, there is a clear evidence of the involvement of Sri Rama Sene in dumping a slain piglet on the premises of Haleema Sadia Trust, which triggered the violence. Many incidents of similar nature, the report says, have been reported across the state and in coastal areas. “We appeal the minorities not to be instigated by such incidents and approach the police,” the team said demanding the administration and the police to instill confidence among the minorities. Though the Karnataka High Court has ordered the release of innocent minority youths, the police is still acting in a biased manner and has kept many under confinement, the team alleged in the report.

The report further said that the Udayagiri incident is being used to rein in fast-expanding PFI for no reason, and alleged that the BJP government in the state and the Sangh Parivar are misusing the administrative machinery to trouble the minorities and the minority forums or groups for no reason.
