Mauritius Leader of Opposition for woman speaker in assembly

New Delhi : Expressing happiness that the current speakers of the lower houses in both India and Pakistan are women, Mauritius opposition leader Paul Raymond Berenger told visiting Indian leader Meira Kumar that the country will nominate a women as speaker when his party comes to power.

“In case, the Mauritian Militant Movement (MMM) comes to power in the forthcoming election, we will nominate a women as the speaker of the National Assembly,” he told Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar at Port Louis Wednesday.

Fehmida Mirza is the Speaker of the National Assembly of Pakistan.

Terming his country’s relations with India as ‘umbilical’, Berenger, the founder leader of MMM, said feelings of solidarity with India were shared unanimously by all political parties in Mauritius.

Kumar, who is heading an Indian parliamentary delegation to Mauritius, called for strong economic relations between the two countries.

“In the coming years not just the emotional but the economic relations between the two nations should be strengthened,” the Lok Sabha secretariat here quoted Kumar in a statement Thursday.
