Suspected terrorist arrested in Delhi

New Delhi : A suspected member of the terror outfit Harkat-ul-Mujahideen, absconding for six years, has been arrested in the capital, police said Monday.

Asad Hilal, 30, was arrested from the Anand Vihar bus terminal in east Delhi late Friday, after he arrived in the city from Sambhal area of Moradabad district in neighbouring Uttar Pradesh.

A court here sent Hilal to two days police custody Saturday.

“Asad managed to escape in 2001, while his two accomplices were arrested. He was assigned to build a support base for terrorists in the capital,” said Joint Commissioner of Police (Special Cell) Karnal Singh.

According to police, his two accomplices, Pakistani terrorists Maqsood Ahmad and Syed Farooq Mohammed, were apprehended Aug 12, 2001 from the McDonald’s restaurant in New Friends Colony area of south Delhi.

Police had then seized two kg of explosives, two detonators and a hand grenade from them. Later six kilograms of RDX was recovered from their hideout in the city.

Police said Hilal met Ahmad in Jamia Millia University. He also came in contact with Mohammed and had made arrangements for sending him to Jammu.

“He made arrangements for Mohammed so that latter could bring explosives for conducting terror activities here,” Singh added.
