New Delhi: The Association for Welfare, Medical, Educational and Legal Assistance (AWMELA) today filed a petition with the President of India for immediate impartial probe into “the inhuman and barbaric way in which alleged Batla House accused Shahzad was picked up on 1st February 2010 from his house in Village Khalispur, Azamgarh, by armed men in plainclothes (later confirmed as Police Force).”
“The way in which our Police threatened civilians through brandishing of weapons and violated the modesty of womenfolk need immediate check,” said AWMELA president Dr Javed Alam adding that in spite of stipulated rights of an arrested person (available on U.P. Police web site), Police invariably violates these rules and regulations with impunity (latest example is the picking up of Shahzad).
The group has also demanded disposal of Batla House case through a fast track court.
“In order to bring to light the truth, trial of Batla House accused should proceed through a fast track court on daily basis. This is necessary in view of educated youths involved who have an unblemished record. The number of cases and voluminous charge sheets will exhaust the whole life of these young Muslim boys without bringing the trial to a conclusion,” AWMELA petition to President Pratibha Patil says.
While strongly condemning all seemingly fake Police encounters like Sohrabuddin, Ishrat Jahan, Batla House, Manipur just to name a few, the group has demanded time bound high level probe under judicial supervision for all such seemingly fake encounters. The group has also condemned “the delaying tactics on part of prosecution/Police force in Batla House accused trial.”
