“For the past four years we have been hiring around 1,200 people every year. This trend will continue for the next five years,” R.C. Shrivastav, director (Human Resources), told reporters on the sidelines of a press meet.

Taking into account the retirements and attrition, the annual addition of manpower will be around 700 people, he said.

“Currently the company has around 25,000 employees and by 2017 the employee count will be around 30,000,” he added.

NTPC has drawn out an ambitious expansion plan with a target to have 75,000 MW installed power generation capacity. The company currently has an installed capacity of 31,134 MW.

According to officials, around 17,930 MW capacity is under construction and about 33,000 MW are under various stages.

Queried about having three employees per MW by 2017 (30,000 employees for 75,000 MW), Shrivastav said: “In respect of plant operations, the manpower is in line with the global benchmark. While foreign power plants outsource activities like maintenance and others, NTPC does them by itself.”

Majority of the new recruits will be engineers, he added.
