Gandhinagar : Prabuddha Nagrik Shakti Manch, a non-political citizens’ group set up by former union textile minister Shankersinh Vaghela and former chief minister Suresh Mehta, is organising a convention at Sanand March 28 to highlight the “misdeeds” of the Narendra Modi government in Gujarat.
Talking to reporters here Thursday, Vaghela said the Manch decided to organise the convention at Sanand, outside Ahmedabad, as it did not want a repeat of the last time when the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led government tried to thwart their meeting and arrested him and Mehta.
“I am warning the Modi government that we will launch a state-wide agitation if any similar attempt is made to thwart our convention,” he added.
Mehta said the convention would focus on fiscal management, poverty alleviation and job creation.
“The outstanding debt of the state now stands at Rs.120,000 crore and the Comptroller and Auditor General’s report has warned that the state is faced with a permanent debt trap,” he said.
Mehta said, as per the government’s own admission, the number of poor in the state has grown from 23 lakh in 2006 to 34 lakh now.
Creation of new jobs through the global investment has also been abysmal. “We want to expose the government with facts and figures,” he said.
