Gandhinagar : Tanvir Jafri, the son of former Congress MP Ehsan Jafri who was killed by rioting mobs during the 2002 Gujarat communal riots, Friday lodged a complaint against Vishwa Hindu Parishad leader Pravin Togadia for “threatening” his mother Zakia Jafri and the rights activist Teesta Setalvad.

In his complaint with Gujarat Director General of Police S.S. Khandwawala, Jafri said that Togadia, after his questioning here by the Supreme Court appointed Special Investigation Team (SIT) Monday, told the media that he would “teach a lesson” to Zakia Jafri and Setalvad, who had filed the affidavit in the apex court leading to the formation of the SIT and summons to him.

Jafri contended Togadia’s statement amounted to threatening his 76-year-old mother for seeking the intervention of the judiciary in the “mass murder and criminal conspiracy” of the 2002 communal riots in the state.

He said Togadia was one of the 62 accused named in his mother’s petition and as the SIT was acting at the behest of the Supreme Court, such intimidation by the VHP leader amounted to interference in the court’s functioning.
