Kochi: The Kerala High Court yesterday asked the state Home Secretary to appear in person in the court on July 5 in connection with the petition demanding a ban on the Jamat e Islami in the state. The petition was submitted by the Islam Matha Prabodhaka Sangham (group propagating Islam) based in Kochi.
The HC directed the Home Secretary to appear in person as he had not submitted the affidavit on the matter by June 25, which the court had ordered earlier. The court observed that petitioner Abdul Samad, convener of the Islam Matha Prabodhaka Sangham, had raised serious allegations. The security of the state was a matter of grave concern if the allegations were true. However, the allegations could not be taken as such. It needed special care of the state and central governments. The court had directed to submit an affidavit when the case was considered on June 10. The central government had reportedly responded that the banning of an organisation and sealing its publications in a state came under the purview of the state government itself. The state government asked for more time for presenting its views.
The state government had last day informed the court that the government was observing the activities and collecting details about the organisation.
The Islam Matha Prabodhaka Sangham is a less-known organisation which came to news only by the petition. The petition was submitted in the HC last year. There are reports that the organisation is run by followers of the Ahmediya Jamat, popularly known as Qadiyanis.
